The Secret Place is a Washington Post Best Thriller of 2014

November 2014

The Secret Place by the inimitable Tana French has been listed as one of The Washington Post's five best thrillers of 2014. Congratulations, Tana!

"French lures readers into the toxic stew of hormones and homicidal rivalries roiling within the hermetically sealed world of teenagers at the school. French, who won an Edgar Award for “In the Woods” (2007), is a poet of mood and a master builder of plots. Here she provides an exquisitely sensitive look at the mean-girl world: the mocking stares, the whisper campaigns, the machinations of cliques. By story’s end, she simultaneously makes you wistful for the galloping intensity of lost adolescence and grateful to have left it with mind and body intact."Maureen Corrigan, The Washington Post

Frankfurt 2014

October 2014

The Rights team have now settled back in after a very busy and successful week at the International Frankfurt Book Fair. Between 7th and 11th October, Clare and Mary held over 120 meetings with publishers from all over the world, closing six deals at the table as well as managing an auction for German rights.

Not only are the fairs a time for selling and pitching new books, but they provide an invaluable opportunity to catch up with our authors’ wonderful overseas editors. Despite the economic crisis still affecting publishing in all markets, the atmosphere was more buoyant and optimistic than has been reported for some time. Publishers are becoming more inventive with how they are publishing and are learning how to survive in tough markets.

The Rights team are now following-up on their meetings and look forward to reporting more on the German auction soon!

Mr. Berger has spent thirty-four years keeping his life as empty as possible. His job title as a closed accounts registrar doesn’t spark much interest, and his cautious flirtation with a woman at his company was cut short upon her engagement to another man. This doesn’t bother him, however, as he much prefers the company of books to that of people. When a series of fortuitous events leads to an early retirement in the English countryside, Mr. Berger is content to spend the remainder of his years nestled comfortably between the pages of a book. But fate has other plans.

His serene life turns strange when he witnesses a tragedy chillingly reminiscent of Anna Karenina as a woman flings herself before a train. When he rushes to the scene, she has vanished, leaving no body on the tracks. Berger’s investigation into this event leads him to Caxton Private Lending Library & Book Depository, where the line between fiction and reality becomes blurred beyond comprehension.

Sunday Times top 10 bestseller Jane Costello's The Time of our Lives is out NOW!

Three best friends. One five-star hotel. Will it be the holiday of a lifetime ...?

Imogen and her friends Meredith and Nicola have had their fill of budget holidays, cattle-class flights and 6 a.m. offensives for a space by the pool.

So when Meredith wins a VIP holiday at Barcelona's hippest new hotel, they plan to sip champagne with the jet set, party with the glitterati and switch off in unapologetic luxury. But when the worst crisis of her working life erupts back home, Imogen has to juggle her BlackBerry with a Manhattan, while soothing a hysterical boss and hunting down an AWOL assistant.

Between a robbery, a run-in with hotel security staff and an encounter on a nudist beach that they'd all rather forget, the friends stumble from one disaster to the next. At least Imogen has a distraction in the form of the gorgeous guy who's always in the right place at the very worst time. Until, that is, his motives start to arouse a few suspicions ...

Hilarious and heart-warming by turns, The Time of Our Lives is Jane Costello at her romantic best.

Stylist says: "True to form, Costello's latest book is hilarious and gripping."

Never Go Back by Lee Child is out NOW!

March 2014

The hotly anticipated paperback of Lee Child's Never Go Back is out in the shops in the UK from today (27th March).

***No. 1 New York Times bestseller***

Never go back—but Jack Reacher does, and the past finally catches up with him. . . . Never Go Back is Lee Child’s new novel of action-charged suspense starring “one of the best thriller characters at work today” (Newsweek).

Praise for Never Go Back

“A breathless cross-country spree . . . some of the best, wiliest writing [Lee] Child has ever done . . . Child’s bodacious action hero, Jack Reacher, has already tramped through 17 novels and three e-book singles. But his latest, Never Go Back, may be the best desert island reading in the series. It’s exceptionally well plotted. And full of wild surprises. And wise about Reacher’s peculiar nature. And positively Bunyanesque in its admiring contributions to Reacher lore.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“Welcome to the relentless world of Jack Reacher and his impressive tendency to be in the wrong place at the right time. . . . Child has created an iconic character that other thriller writers try to emulate but don’t come close to matching. He has a talent for taking material that in the hands of other authors would be stale and making it seem fresh. . . . Tight and compelling . . . Never Go Back is one of Child’s best novels.”—Associated Press

“An adrenaline-charged, action-packed thriller . . . impossible to put down.”—Lansing State Journal

“The dialogue has never been sharper. . . . The pages turn themselves.”—San Antonio Express-News

“For the pure pleasure of uncomplicated, nonstop action, no one touches Reacher.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Brilliant . . . Child never, ever slips. He keeps the action cranking better than anyone, but, best of all, he keeps us guessing about Reacher.”—Booklist (starred review)

“One of the best in the series.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Jefferson Winter is no ordinary investigator.

The son of one of America's most renowned serial killers, Winter has spent his life trying to distance himself from his father's legacy. Once a rising star at the FBI, he is now a freelance consultant, jetting around the globe helping local law enforcement agencies with difficult cases. He's not got Da Vinci's IQ, but he's pretty close.

When he accepts a particularly disturbing case in London, Winter arrives to find a city in the grip of a cold snap, with a psychopath on the loose who likes abducting and lobotomising young women. Winter must use all his preternatural brain power in order to work out who is behind the attacks, before another young woman becomes a victim.

As Winter knows all too well, however, not everyone who's broken can be fixed.

They both stressed the importance of tenacity and determination, as it’s a long and tough, but rewarding, road to getting published. Clare also talked about getting an agent’s attention and how to put together a brilliant standout submission. To round off their section, they did a Q&A and a ‘submission live’ quick-fire round. Several brave attendees read out their covering letters or the first page of their manuscript and were provided with quick, immediate feedback from both Clare and Kim.

Because Lee wasn't able to be in Barcelona, Mary Darby and Clare Wallace were delighted to represent him at the award ceremony. The award was introduced by actress Aitana Sánchez-Gijón and presented to Mary by President of the Catalan goverment, Artur Mas. Mary passed on Lee's thanks in a short speech.

Finished Business by David Wishart is Out NOW!

July 2014

November, AD40. When a wealthy consul’s wife asks Corvinus to investigate the death of her uncle, killed by a block of falling masonry at his estate on Vatican Hill, a sceptical Corvinus is inclined to agree with the general verdict of accidental death. But his investigations reveal clear evidence of foul play, as well as unearthing several skeletons among the closets of this well-to-do but highly dysfunctional family.

Who could have wanted Lucius Surdinus dead? His vengeful ex-wife? His ambitious mistress? His disillusioned elder, or his estranged younger, son? Or does the key to the mystery lie in the dead man’s political past?

But when Corvinus’s probing draws him to the attention of the emperor, a dangerously unpredictable Caligula, his prospects of surviving long enough to solve the mystery look slim to say the least....

Initial reviews on Amazon call it; 'impossible to put down' and 'the best to date.... from opening the book this morning, I've ignored everything else today...and have come straight in to write this review, still buzzing from the tension and excitement of the tale.'

Child and Connolly Storm Hay

June 2014

On the weekend of the 31st May, the agency visited Hay-on-Wye for the last few days of the annual literary festival, where two of our authors, Lee Child and John Connolly, both talked to tents packed with fans.

John Connolly spoke to a captivated audience of his younger readers about how sci-fi and fantasy are much more widely read than children and teenagers think, for example, The Hunger Games and Divergent. With the use of clips from old news footage, as well as scary films he had watched as a child, John illustrated how sci-fi and fantasy are often not based on the future, as we usually assume, but discuss and dissect matters that are happening in the World today.

A two minute excerpt from Pan’s Labyrinth helped John expose the dark and frightening side of fairy tales, which led him to reveal how he came to write the The Book of Lost Things. John’s fans also quizzed him on the inspiration behind the Gates of Hell in the Samuel Johnson series (the Large Hadron Collider) and where his idea for the devil came from (the 1980's classic, Legend).

It was Lee Child’s first time at the festival and he was in conversation with Sarah Crompton (Arts Editor in Chief, Daily Telegraph) about the Jack Reacher series. Lee told the audience about how he came to writing, how he developed the series and whether he knew it was be a bestseller from the start. Lee admitted that he doesn’t extensively plan his novels; rather he crafts the perfect first sentence and goes from there. He also explained that his books are full of interesting bits of information, or facts, because he himself is deeply interested in trivia. There was a very lively discussion of Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher in the films, with plenty of audience participation.

Both authors also separately discussed their crime fiction in broadcasts for the BBC. If you would like to listen to John in discussion with Anthony Horrowitz and Yrsa Sigurdottir about crime fiction, click here. To listen to Lee discuss the Reacher series on Radio 4’s Front Row, please click here.

Martina On Tour

May 2014

Martina Cole visited fans at Tesco Watford as part of her role as ambassador for the Six Book Challenge.

She met with union learning representatives to celebrate the success of the scheme which aims at getting everyone reading.

She says  "I really wanted to become an ambassador for The Reading Agency because reading is such a big part of my life. The wonderful thing about the Six Book Challenge is that people who don't normally read, or who think that reading isn't their bag, are encouraged to pick up a book. When you read a book you have to picture it all in your own mind. No one tells you what you're seeing or what you should be feeling. That's the secret of reading – it's such a personal thing."

The community of Prosperous, Maine, has always thrived when others have suffered. Its inhabitants are wealthy, its children’s future secure. It keeps outsiders out. And its secrets in. At the heart of the town lie the ruins of an ancient church, transported stone by stone from England centuries earlier by the founders.

But the death of a homeless man and the disappearance of his daughter draw the haunted, lethal, private investigator, Charlie Parker to Prosperous. Parker is a dangerous man, driven by compassion, rage, and the desire for vengeance. The town, and its protectors sense a threat graver than any they have faced in their long history. And in the comfortable, sheltered inhabitants of a small Maine community, Parker will encounter his most vicious enemies yet.

Charlie Parker has been marked to die so that Prosperous may survive. Prosperous, and the secret that it hides beneath its ruins…

Survivor is the 22nd book by internationally bestselling author Lesley Pearse and the 3rd in the Belle Trilogy.

With the world on the brink of war, Mariette leaves home bound for her aunt and uncle's house in London.

Armed with the freedom she's longed for since childhood, Mari quickly falls for Morgan, the handsome cockney steward on board ship. But once she reaches London, there are other temptations.

Mari loves her new life - caught up in a whirl of dances and parties in the glittering West End, relishing her freedom as she earns her own money as a typist. Finally, she feels she is mistress of her own future.
Until it is all snatched away by the war.

As London endures the Blitz, Mari's new life is cruelly blown apart. Forced from her loving new home, she ends up alone in the East End, and it's worlds away from the London she knows. But there, even in the face of so much despair, she finds the chance to make a difference. Amidst the destruction, Mari learns that the only way to survive this war is to fight, with all the strength, selflessness and compassion within her...and only then will she find true happiness.

Because Mari is a survivor...

Survivor is a story of bravery and love.

Martina Cole Champions Reading On The High Seas

February 2014

Megaseller Martina Cole popped in to Marine Society's new library as Ambassador of The Reading Agency Six Book Challenge! She hopes to encourage seafarers across the world to pick up a book.

“My love of books is all down to my merchant seaman father,” says Martina Cole. “I remember when I was a small child him bringing home from his travels a cardboard theatre, and when I opened the faux crimson velvet curtains, hidden away behind them were the smallest books I had ever seen. The stories were all Aesop fables and fairy tales and I was absolutely entranced. As I got older, the subject matter progressed and I remember pouncing on his bag as soon as he was back from a trip to devour the latest bestseller – Harold Robbins was an eye-opener!”

How To Get A (Love) Life: The Launch

January 2014

On Wednesday night, Clare, Mary, Emma, Vicki, Camilla, Keshini and Sheila attended the fantastic launch party of Rosie Blake’s debut novel, How to Get a (Love) Life.

Set in the opulent and quirky surroundings of Bar Soho in London, the DA team were welcomed with cocktails, posters and postcards with hilarious quotes from Rosie’s book. The room was packed with familiar faces from the publishing industry and lots of bloggers from the online community.

Rosie gave a wonderfully funny speech in which she thanked her editor, Kirsty, and the team at Novelicious. She also thanked her agent, Clare, and the rest of the Darley Anderson Agency. The celebration was a roaring success – we know Rosie’s book will be one too!

Rosie’s book is out now and available here. She is already no.16 on the Amazon Bestseller list in Love, Sex and Marriage humour!

Lesley Pearse Becomes First National Libraries Day Ambassador!

January 2014

Lesley Pearse will be the first Ambassador for National Libraries Day.

The national celebration of libraries will take place on Saturday the 8th of February 2014, rounding off a week's worth of events and activities in public, school, college, university and workplace libraries.

Lesley said "I am so very proud to be asked to be the first Ambassador for National Libraries Day. To me libraries are one of the most important assets we have in the UK, and should be kept going at all costs."

Lesley's love affair with libraries began when her family moved to London, and (aged 11) she found the perfect sanctuary in Northbrook Library. She says, "I was late in learning to read because of being in care for a few years, but once I could read I was voracious. The staff at the library must have recognised a real need in me and they sorted out books especially for me."

"Libraries are vital. They are a primary source of knowledge and of entertainment. Books widen your world and teach you so much. Whether you are into romantic fiction, dark thrillers, science fiction, biographies, poetry, war books, history, geography, religion, it's all there to be tapped into. Age doesn't matter, from a four year old wanting The Gruffalo, to students studying for exams or a retired person wanting to read up on their hobby, all are welcome....I love libraries and it's my mission to make everyone else value and love them too."
