The arrival of a new head teacher in the school causes a ripple of excitement to run through the village. She is young and attractive and very modern in her methods and outlook. But her arrival seems to herald some mysterious events for which there is no explanation. The apparent coming back to life of Jimmy's old dog, the disappearance of the rectory cat and the sudden death of a well loved villager spread terror. Are these incidents all related? If so who has perpetrated them?

Then one night Turnham Malpas suffers a colossal storm, and the church is struck by lightning. It seems significant to everyone that it is the church which has suffered, it does indeed appear to be the wrath of God. People become fearful to trust anyone at all. These events spur the rector and others to set about discovering the truth, and they do.

But tragedy ensues and the village has to draw on its old strengths to overcome the shock...
