TROUBLE
IN THE VILLAGE
THE EIGHTH IN THE
TALES OF TURNHAM MALPAS
Caroline is deeply worried about her husband Peter’s disappearance.
The Rector’s absence has an even greater effect on the people
of the village whose way of life seems to be in jeopardy.
When Willie Biggs, the Verger, retires his successor Tom Nichols appears
to be just the man for the job. However, events in Tom’s past
return to haunt him and bring violence and danger to the peace of the
village. Mr Fitch at the Big House plans to destroy and ancient hedgerow
and timid Lady Muriel Templeton leads a protest to stop him.
When Peter returns his sensible approach brings solutions, but only
Caroline can resolve the difficulties between the two of them. Mr Fitch’s
feeling of shame prompts him to host the annual Bonfire Night celebrations
with more style and generosity than he has ever shown before. The villagers
are greatly amused by this and, reunited in their feeling of wellbeing
set about enjoying themselves in a village restored to calm and happiness.
