OUR
WRITERS MEAN BUSINESS
How has your first year as a published author been?
Exciting! It’s taken me a long time to get published, so it’s great to finally see my book in print and in the bookshops.
What can people who have not read ‘Daughters of Fortune’ expect?
A fast-paced blockbuster, about three heiresses to a fashion dynasty. Lots of glamour, drama, backstabbing and romance.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to new authors?
To learn to be patient. In my experience, the world of publishing moves quite slowly.
What was the last book you bought?
Harlan Coben’s ‘Play Dead’. I didn’t realise it was the first book he ever wrote. Needless to say, he has improved!
What would be your desert island books?
Ken Follett’s ‘Pillars of the Earth’, and the sequel, ‘World Without End’. At about 2,000 pages, they should keep me busy for a very long time!
How do you go about doing research for your books?
I guess some of it is general knowledge; sometimes I talk to experts in a particular field; and often I read non-fiction books (say, travel guides or biographies). And, as a last resort, I hit wikepedia!
Why did you approach the Darley Anderson Agency?
Because Darley represented two of my favourite authors – Lesley Pearse and Martina Cole. I’m a huge fan of both, and re-read Lesley Pearse’s ‘Camellia’ every year.
And finally, what can we expect next from Tara Hyland?
It’s July 2010 now, and I’ve just finished the edits of my second book. I’m still searching for a title, but it should be out in September 2011. It’s about a mother who abandons her daughter in search of fame and fortune, and the consequences of her actions on them both. It’s another fast-paced read, which takes in everything from the golden age of Hollywood to London’s East End in the sixties.
